A packaging line's layout affects throughput just as much as the equipment on it. A well-chosen machine placed poorly can still create bottlenecks. Here's how to think through layout to reduce wasted motion and downtime.
Map Your Actual Product Flow
Before rearranging anything, trace exactly how product moves from one step to the next in your current layout. Bottlenecks are often easier to spot once the flow is mapped out visually rather than experienced piecemeal on the floor.
Minimize Backtracking
Layouts that require product or operators to move backward through the line — rather than a consistent forward flow — waste time and increase the chance of errors or collisions between stations.
Give Bottleneck Stations Room to Breathe
Whichever step in your process is slowest usually benefits from extra buffer space before and after it, so upstream and downstream stations aren't forced to pause every time that step falls behind.
Plan for Future Equipment, Not Just Current
If you're likely to add equipment as you grow, leave room in the layout now rather than needing a full reconfiguration later. Retrofitting a cramped layout is more disruptive than planning ahead.
