Cross-linked polyolefin film goes through an additional manufacturing process that strengthens the film's molecular structure, giving it higher puncture resistance, better clarity retention, and a wider temperature tolerance than standard film.
When Standard Film Is the Right Call
For lighter, smoother products without sharp edges, standard polyolefin film delivers a clean shrink at a lower cost. If your product isn't putting unusual stress on the film, paying extra for cross-linked durability may not add meaningful value.
When Cross-Linked Film Is Worth It
Heavier products, sharp corners, multi-packs with hard edges, or items that go through rough handling during shipping all benefit from cross-linked film's added durability. It also holds up better across a wider range of tunnel temperatures, which can help if your settings vary between product runs.
Cost vs. Failure Rate
It's worth weighing the cost difference against your current failure or tear rate. If you're seeing frequent tears with standard film, the cost of upgrading to cross-linked often pays for itself in reduced waste and rework.
